History Is Lunch: Fergus Bordewich, "Grant, the KKK, and the War for Reconstruction in Mississippi"

At noon on Wednesday, October 2, Fergus Bordewich will present "Grant, the KKK, and the War for Reconstruction in Mississippi" as part of the History Is Lunch series. The program will take place in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum building and stream live on the MDAH Facebook page and YouTube channel. Book sales and signing to follow.

#WeltyatHome: The Robber Bridegroom and The Ponder Heart.  Readers are invited to tune in with Suzanne Marrs, Eudora Welty's friend and biographer, at noon for an online discussion of Eudora Welty’s novels, The Robber Bridegroom and The Ponder Heart. This series will continue weekly on Mondays, September 16, October 7, October 14, and October 21. There will be a brief pause in this program on September 23 and September 30.

Tracing African American Ancestors Using State Records Genealogy Workshop

Learn how to start researching your family history! Join our genealogy workshop on Tracing African American Ancestors Using State Records at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, at the William F. Winter Archives & History Building. Led by Joyce Dixon-Lawson, this workshop will teach participants how to research African American genealogy through navigating state records and resources available in the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) archival collections.

Hezekiah Watkins’ Birthday Celebration

Celebrate Hezekiah Watkins' birthday at the Two Mississippi Museums on Sunday, September 1. On this free admission day, Watkins will share his experience during the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement at noon, 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Copies of Watkins' Pushing Forward: The Story of Mississippi's Youngest Freedom Rider and t-shirts will be available for purchase, with a book signing available. Sunday Screening of An Ordinary Hero

Join us for a screening of An Ordinary Hero: The True Story of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums. This film explores the life of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, who witnessed the realities of segregation and racism firsthand and participated in the Civil Rights Movement. At just 19 years old, Mulholland had participated in more than three dozen protests and was incarcerated on death row at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman after joining the Freedom Rides.
