Indigenous Natchez Language

Interested in knowing more about the Indigenous Natchez language? Join us at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians for a free public event on language revitalization. Geoffrey Kimball, author of Natchez Analytical Dictionary, will discuss documentation from the last speakers of Natchez and the work of linguist Mary Haas. Keith Cunningham, historical linguist and language revitalization specialist, will share how he uses the dictionary to help people of Natchez descent develop learning tools and teaching materials. Sam family descendants, Darlene Sam Gomez and Kristin Naeher Deras, will speak about their genealogy and their collaboration with Cunningham to support language revitalization efforts. Copies of Natchez Analytical Dictionary will be available for purchase in the museum store, and a book signing will follow the program. The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Boulevard, Natchez, Mississippi 39210. For more information, visit info@natchezgrandvillage.com or call 601-446-6502.
