History Is Lunch

History Is Lunch is a weekly lecture series that explores different aspects of the state's past. The hour-long programs are held in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum building in Jackson.

MDAH livestreams the program at noon on Wednesdays on MDAH's Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/MDAHOfficial/. The videos are posted on the department’s YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/MDAHVideo.

History is Lunch: Katharine Burnett and Monica Carol Miller "The Tacky South"
Katharine Burnett and Monica Carol Miller will discuss their new book The Tacky South. As a way to comment on a person’s style or taste, the word “tacky” has distinctly southern origins. Its roots trace to the so-called “tackies” who tacked horses on South Carolina farms before the Civil War.
History is Lunch: "Race Land: The Ecology of Segregation."
On March 1, 2023, Maarten Zwiers presented “Race Land: The Ecology of Segregation.” Race Land is a joint research project of the University of Mississippi, the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies, Tulane University, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands with funding from the European Commission that examines how exploitation and entanglement upheld the white supremacist Jim Crow society of the U.S. South.
