Tours of the Eudora Welty House and Garden are given Tuesday - Friday, four times a day at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. and 9 and 11 a.m. the second Saturday of each month. The Education and Visitors Center and Gift Shop are open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month.
Come to the Gift Shop in the Education and Visitors Center next door to the Welty House, at 1109 Pinehurst Street before beginning your tour. Here you will be welcomed by our staff or a docent, invited to view our permanent and temporary exhibits, see an orientation film, and browse the Gift Shop's books, postcards, and other Welty-related items.
Visitors are welcome to visit the EVC, watch the orientation film and stroll through the garden at no charge.
Tours of the house are limited to 13 persons at a time. For larger tours, see the group touring information below. Please allow 1 1/2 hours to tour the House and Gardens. Visitors must be able to climb one flight of stairs to take a complete tour of the House. In the Garden, visitors must be able to negotiate uneven terrain.
Pets are not permitted; only service animals are allowed on the premises. Photography is not allowed inside the Eudora Welty House, and strollers, large bags, and backpacks are not permitted. In the event of inclement weather, please call to check the status of tours.
When making a reservation for a tour, please provide a contact name and telephone number, the number attending in your party, and the date and time of your preferred tour. Should you be unable to make your pre-scheduled tour time, please call us to cancel and/or to reschedule your tour.
The Eudora Welty House and Garden is happy to arrange group tours for members of the general public and for education-related visits. To arrange a group tour or school visit, please complete the Group Tour Request Form (PDF). Upon receipt of this form, a Welty House staff member will contact you to discuss details.
The museum welcomes groups with a variety of interests and backgrounds including book clubs, garden societies, senior groups, library associations, garden clubs, literary organizations, and family and alumni reunions. Educational field trips for grades 6-12 and for colleges and graduate schools are also highly encouraged.
Groups with more than 13 people will be divided into smaller groups to insure a more enjoyable visitor experience. Larger, subdivided groups should plan to stay for a two hour period to allow time for everyone to complete the full tour. Because of space and time constraints, the Eudora Welty House and Garden can only accommodate tour groups of 39 people or less during a single tour period. For groups larger than 39 people, two tour times must be reserved.
PLEASE NOTE: Reservations for group tours must be made at least two weeks in advance and are subject to availability. Because March, April, and May are especially busy, we recommend that groups interested in visiting during these months make reservations well in advance.
