Documents and pages within a document were numbered consecutively by the archivist at the time of scanning. The image identification number consists of two parts: a document number followed by the page number. The image identification number is formed as follows with the document and page number separated by a dash: Image id # 2-2. [second page of the second document]
Personal Name Search
Each original document was indexed for personal names. A listing of all names with identification and variant spellings is provided in the table below.
Variant Name Forms/Spellings
Please be aware that the collection contains variant spellings of many names. The search capability is not hindered by variant forms or spellings of a particular name and links all variations to a primary name form. A search on a particular name will retrieve all images in which that name was indexed, regardless of how the name was written in a particular document. However, you may notice that your search term differs from how the name was formed or written on a particular page.
To assist with the search and comprehension of the records, the processing archivist has identified all the personal names indexed. The identification statement appears in the Name Search Results Screen following the search term.

- Original Scans - The original scans of the Jefferson Davis Estate Papers were carried out in August 2004, according to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Board of Trustees' approved imaging procedures, following ANSI/AIIM recommended practice. The images were scanned as uncompressed, 24-bit RGB TIFFs at 600 pixels per inch.
- Conversion - The original scans of the Jefferson Davis Estate papers were converted in September 2004. The images were converted to 24bit true color PNGs at 600 pixels per inch.
- Scanning Comments - The pages were scanned in the order in which the collection was received from the Harrison County Chancery Clerk's Office. Only pages with content were scanned. Blank pages were not scanned. For example, if a two-sided sheet of paper only had content on one side then the page with content was scanned and the blank page was not scanned. In instances where both sides of a two-sided sheet were scanned the second page is described as the reverse of preceding image. Images were numbered consecutively within each document.
Due to their fragile condition, the original records were not removed from their protective Mylar encapsulation to scan. In some instances Mylar covering may cause a barely discernable image distortion. Each image is displayed with the following scanning comment: Original Encapsulated.
