January, 1930: Modern state highway system in Mississippi begins

The legislature passed the Stansel Act, which called for a primary road system of not more than 2,000 miles to connect county seats, principal highways of adjoining states, state institutions, and other places in the state with a population of 500 or more.  It also reduced the number of highway commissioners from eight to three.
