At 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, author Michael Cottman will sign copies of his book Shackles from the Deep: Tracing the Path of a Sunken Slave Ship, a Bitter Past, and a Rich Legacy at the the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

Cottman’s book examines the journey of the Henrietta Marie, an English slave ship which capsized off the coast of Florida in 1700. The Henrietta Marie is the subject of the Spirits of the Passage exhibit on temporary display at the museums.

The Gwendolyn Magee exhibit, on loan to the museums from the Mississippi Museum of Art, and Spirits of the Passage: The Story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade will close on August 11. This exhibit was made possible with the support of StateStreet Group, LLC and Visit Jackson.
