92747-01-postcard_mhs webThe 2017 Mississippi Historical Society annual meeting will celebrate Mississippi’s bicentennial in Gulfport, site of the planned 1917 state centennial celebration that was cancelled due to the nation’s entry into World War I. Particular focus will be given to the pre-statehood period, early Mississippi governors, the impact of the Civil War, and the struggle for racial equality in the state. Attendees will hear targeted, in-depth presentations on topics that include Native American culture in Mississippi, Mississippi’s role in the Civil War, firsthand accounts of civil rights activities, and the importance of local history. Author Thomas E. Simmons will present on his book, The Man Called Brown Condor: The Forgotten History of an African American Fighter Pilot, at Friday’s luncheon.

Early registration is $35 for MHS members and $60 for non-members. Registration after February 17 is $50 for MHS members and $75 for non-members. Call 601-576-6849 or email mhs@mdah.state.ms.us for more information.

Rooms are reserved for Thursday evening, March 2 and Friday evening, March 3 at the Courtyard Gulfport Beachfront, 1600 East Beach Boulevard, Gulfport.
