Saturday, August 3, 1–2 p.m. at the Two Mississippi Museums. Shackles From the Deep: The Henrietta Marie. Award-winning journalist Michael Cottman will discuss his book Shackles From the Deep Tracing the Path of a Sunken Slave Ship, a Bitter Past, and a Rich Legacy. The book details the four years he spent researching the origin of the Henrietta Marie, retracing the route of the slave ship, and diving to the sea floor to explore the vessel’s remains.
Cottman will sign copies of his book following the presentation. Spirits of the Passage: the Story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade—a special exhibit exploring the Henrietta Marie—will be free of charge throughout the day. There is no charge to attend the program, which will be held in the Ray and Nancy Neilsen Hall of History at the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
